The first graves appeared in this area in 1831, but the Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest was built after 1850. It was the idea of C.A. Rosetti, a Romanian politician of the time. The strangest thing about this story is that his first child will be buried here and it was also the first grave on the new graveyard. Until the Bellu Cemetery became an official place for families to bury their dead, everyone had used the ground around churches. Pavel Kiseleff, governor of the country between 1829 and 1834 decided that special places were needed as graveyards, outside the city.

ALLEY OF THE POETS AT BUCHAREST CEMETERY

Bellu Cemetery name comes from a local rich man who lived in Bucharest, called Barbu Bellu and who was also the minister of Culture and Justice. He owned the land where the new cemetery was built, according to a law of funeral voted in 1850. He is said to have, as the other landowners of the period also had, a special network of tunnels to escape when the city had been under siege or when the country had been at war. One of the tunnels would go under nowadays YOUTH PARK IN BUCHAREST, but this information had never been for public. On the right side, as you enter the cemetery is the alley of the artists. Here are buried Mihai Eminescu, the Romanian national poet, I.L. Caragiale, Mihail Sadoveanu or George Calinescu etc.

ACTORS TOMBS IN BUCHAREST

If you turn to left when you enter Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest, you will soon find the alley where the great actors of Romania are buried. Before you see them, you should know that the entire graveyard is full of monuments and sculptures made by famous artists, like Karl and FREDERIC STORCK, Ion Georgescu or Cornel Medrea. At Bellu Cemetery Bucharest are also buried The Admiral Vasile Urseanu whose OBSERVATORY IN BUCHAREST you can now also visit, the great actresse Anda CalugareanuAre also buried here Iulia Hasdeu, whose father believed she communicated with him after death and, maybe, the greatest poet of Romania, Nichita Stanescu.

There are many actors buried at Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest: Birlic, Gheorghe Dinica and, also, Toma Caragiu. The irony at this grave, as you will see, is that this actor has always been a master of irony to the communist regime which was the state from 1946 to 1989. He was making fun of the communists in every movie. Toma Caragiu died in 1977 at the great earthquake and his statue is looking just at the back of a young girl who seems to be a real communist, with the tie of the young communists and so on. You might think that the poor actor will have to look for the eternity at the back of a young communist. 🙂 That was the funny part of our journey to Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest. Just a few steps near is the REVOLUTION HEROES CEMETERY
