HISTORY OF BUCHAREST TRAIN STATION

The building of Bucharest North Railway Station became functional in 1872. There were two parts of the construction with a great hall in the middle, a hall that still exists today. We can still see the old part of the station at the entrance from I.Gh. Duca Boulevard. There are two towers and the first floor built as a loggia.

Only ten railway lines could be used in 1920. As the city grew larger and crowded, the building needed repairs and improvement works. The authorities planned even to build a new Bucharest Railway Station near CISMIGIU GARDENS but that never happened.

BUCHAREST RAILWAY STATION IN WORLD WAR II

In 1944, Bucharest North Railway Station was almost destroyed by the Allies bombs during World War II. It was important for the US and UK to cut any connections between Bucharest and the East of the country, in order the Romanians and the Germans not to be able to send additional troops to fight against the Russians who were at the borders in their way to Berlin. Thus, in April 1944, 3,000 bombs were thrown only in Bucharest and the North Railway Station was hit 6 times. More than 1,000 wagons were destroyed by fire.
