Romanian Peasant Museum in Bucharest is in Victory Square. It is near Antipa Museum and Geology Museum. Authorities initially called it the Museum from the main avenue. That is because from the Victory Square begins the Victory Avenue. It has been for a long time the main street of the city. We have been living for more than 25 years in Bucharest and we know this museum quite well. There are many interesting things about the Romanian life in the villages all over the country here. To mention, Romania has been and still is a rural country. So, everything you find here, you will meet in your travels around Romania.

PEASANT MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST HISTORY

The idea of such an institution to house original Romanian peasants’ tools and traditional art items belonged to Lord Alexandru Ioan Cuza. It was inthe year 1860. He ordered an exhibition to take place in one the oldest market places of the city, Obor. The peasants exhibited flowers, farming tools, popular art items and even animals. The nowadays headquarters of the Peasant Museum in Bucharest, was built between 1912 and 1941. Some collections had already been gathered and exhibited since the opening of the new museum in other institutions. It was The National Museum of Antiquities which housed them.

The first manager of the Peasant Museum was Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcas. In 1948, the communists forced him to resign. The building became the headquarters of Lenin-Stalin Museum and of The History of the Communist Party Museum.

BEST EUROPEAN MUSEUM IN 1996 – PEASANT MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST

In the dark ages of communism, the state moved many of the popular art  collections in other places. Thus, they got to Stirbey Palace on Victory Avenue in 1978. This was known as the Popular Art Museum of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Then, in 1978 they moved them at VILLAGE MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST.  Unfortunatelly, many of them were damaged or lost. After 1990, the Peasant Museum in Bucharest moved again in the building meant to be its headquarters from the very beginning.

New items are brought here and following a new strategy, the management team will win the EMYA prize for the best European museum in 1996. There are almost 100,000 items in permanent or temporary thematic exhibitions.
