WHAT TO SEE AT RAILWAYS MUSEUM BUCHAREST

There are many things to see at the Railways Museum in Bucharest, yet it is not so amazing as such museums are in different European capitals. I visited it in the summer of 2018 and I was not impressed at all, but for the diorama, the biggest in Romania, dedicated to the railways infrastructure. Yet, you should know that a ticket for one adult is 4 RON and if you want to take pictures is 13 RON, while for making videos is 33 RON. The Railways Museum Bucharest is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM. You can see inside different copies of old engines, wagons and clocks brought here from railway stations all around Romania.

HISTORY OF RAILWAYS MUSEUM BUCHAREST

This museum was opened in 1939 but it was almost destroyed in the World War Two together with the NORTH RAILWAY STATION BUCHAREST, which was one of the main targets in the Romanian capital for the allies planes, before Romania got out of the war and started fighting against the Nazis in 1944. It was open again in 1953 in the new location for, in the beginning, the exhibition was in Giulesti Area, near the new headquarters. The Railways Museum in Bucharest was closed again in 1968 to be open again one year later when Romania celebrated 100 years from the opening of its first railway Bucharest – Giurgiu. In 1876 the King Carol the 1st, the first monarch of modern Romania noted that it took about an hour to get from the capital to Giurgiu by train, on the new open route. There is an irony here from the historical point of view: nowadays it takes an hour to get from Bucharest to Giurgiu, too, so the infrastructure is almost the same in 2018.

The Railways Museum Bucharest has only 3 rooms where you can also see locomotives from different times of the Romanian history, ticket collectors’ uniforms, also the rebuilt engine that made the first trip from Bucharest to Giurgiu in 1869, a layout of the Saligny bridge and so on. It was in 1895, when the nowadays bridge at Cernavoda over the Danube was built. The constructor, Anghel Saligny invited the king and the government to officially open the bridge, which was called King Carol the 1st and is now called Saligny. He stood with his team under the bridge in a boat when the first two trains crossed the Danube on the bridge. If it fell, they were dead. It was a prove that he had done a great job. His portrait and layout of that bridge are to be seen at Railways Museum Bucharest.

A GREAT EXHIBIT AT RAILWAYS MUSEUM BUCHAREST

One of the most interesting things I’ve seen here, at the Railways Bucharest Museum is an old locomotive. This engine, you will see below, is a Pacific engine. You will see it inside the museum and outside, when you will find yourself right in the North Railway Station. These locomotive were built, for the first time, in 1902 in the United States and they first arrived in Romania between 1914 and 1916 through a German company, Maffei. After the war, in 1953, the Romanian authorities would ask for help from the same company to buy another 50 such engines. The Pacific locomotives have a great story in Romania: the last one, the 2213 one, last served the Romanian Railways Company in 1975. This type of engines had been used in Romania for 60 years. Each one, developing a 123 km per hour speed, covered from 7 to 10 millions kilometers, which is about 200 times going around Planet Earth. It can be seen at the Railways Museum Bucharest.
