Pallady Museum in Bucharest is not far away from the University Square or Unification Square. Actually, if you are, let’s say at the University you can get there by tramway, which means the lines 85, 69, 90, 70, 66 and you only need to count two stations. Then, you have to cross the street( you will have the Armenian Church on your left) and reach Spatarului Street No. 22 and that is the address where the Pallady Museum is. So it is quite close to the center of Bucharest.

Theodor Pallady Museum is an interesting landmark for two reasons: it is housed by one of the oldest dwelling buildings in Bucharest, Malic House and here you can see collection of more than 1700 items, valuable paintings but not only.

Theodor Pallady, one of greatest Romanian painters, was born in 1871. He will study the Polytechnics in Dresda but soon will realize he was made for painting. In 1892 Theodor Pallady enters Gustave Moreau’s workroom in Paris where he will also meet Henri Matisse. It is in Paris


where Pallady will become the friend of Gheorghe Raut whose guest will be a few years and who will also donate his collection, including Pallady’s works to the Romanian State. This happened in 1970.

In 1904, the painter returns to Romania and will exhibit at the Athenaeum, but his works will also be admired at Vienna, Venice and, of course, Paris. He will die in Bucharest in 1956. The nowadays headquarters of Theodor Pallady Museum tells a beautiful story. It was built in 1760 in the Armenian suburb in Bucharest and was the property of a very rich merchant, Hagi Chevorc Nazaretoglu. His daughter married


an Armenian architect who will repair the house after 1822 and during the revolution of 1848, will hide the leaders of the movement, like I.H.Radulescu and even Ion C. Bratianu in the attic of the building.

The Armenian architect who repaired the building was called Iacob Melic and this is the reason Pallady Museum is also known as Melic House. After his death, his widow will donate all her wealth to the University of Bucharest. The institution had to help for this a young student to go and study in Paris.


The house will also be donated to the Armenian community in Bucharest to be house for poor widows. Here are now exhibited many works from the French period of Pallady.
