WHAT TO SEE AT NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM BUCHAREST

From dinosaurs found on the Romanian territory to nowadays species of plants and animals, from Black Sea treasures to exotic, living butterflies exhibitions, everything is to be seen at The Natural History Museum in Bucharest. It was built between 1904 and 1906 after Mihai Roco’s plans but the ideea belonged to a great boyar, Mihalache Ghica, the Lord Alexandru Ghica’s brother in 1834. We started from here in February 2019 to see and take photos of the most interesting BUILDINGS ON VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST and it was fun if you are interested.

ANTIPA MUSEUM HISTORY

Actually Mihalache Ghica donated more than 150 minerals, shells, fish, birds and fossils. In 1857, Carol Ferrerati will become the manager of the museum and he will persuade the Museum in Torino to donate about 700 of exhibit pieces, birds, fish and minerals again. Ten years later, the museum is housed by the University of Bucharest. It is the moment when a Romanian doctor in the Lowland army, Hilarie Mitrea, will also donate 1000 species of animals to the museum. In 1894, Grigore Antipa, one of the greatest Romanian scholars will become the manager of the Natural History Museum in Bucharest. He will rebuild the frontage of the building which will be officially opened in 1908, in the presence of King Carol I.

THE DIORAMA AT ”ANTIPA” MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST

4 diorama will be also opened for visitors, about Sahara desert, the African savanna, the American prairie and the tundra. There were among the first diorama in the world. In 1933, the museum will be given the nowadays name. It will need consolidation works after the Great Earthquake in 1977. Butterflies collections are bought in time, like Ostrogovitch and Caradja but pieces for exhibitions are also brought in the 90s from Brasilia or Indonesia. The collections of the museums are exhibited in a one-way tour from underground to the first floor in order the visitor to see the entire evolution of Earth and its beings from the beginning. The most important piece to see in the National Museum of Natural History in Bucharest is the skeleton of a gigantic elephant, unique in the whole world, discovered in 1893 in Vaslui, Romania. This giant lived more than 10 mil. years ago on this territory.
