BUCHAREST CITY GRILL OLD TOWN

WHERE IS CITY GRILL RESTAURANT IN OLD CITY OF BUCHAREST

There are many restaurants in the Old City of Bucharest where you can have a drink, breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. We started this summer to try as many as possible and write here about dishes and drinks. We’d mention City Grill restaurant, Manuc’s Inn, Tears and Saints for the beginning. Of course, there are many, many more and, in time, we’ll visit them, try their cuisine and write about them on this new category of our Bucharest Travel Guide called Restaurants.

Update! Since 2022 spring everything is opened. Pay attention! From March 8, 2021, many restaurants are closed in Bucharest

City Grill restaurant is near Manuc’s Inn in Bucharest Old City, not far from Unirii Square, actually ten minutes walk and also not far from the Old Court. They say you can find here the so-called traditional urban kitchen which is a fine mix of Romanian traditional dishes and new, even exotic food.

WHAT TO EAT AT CITY GRILL IF IN A HURRY

We had lunch at City Grill in Old Bucharest this September, on a Saturday,  when the weather was still fine to visit the Old Town and there were still tables outside, in front of the restaurant. Anyway, when it is too cold, there is enough space inside at the ground floor and first floor which is alright if are not a heavy smoker like me. It might be a little crowded especially from 12 to 2 PM in week-ends but you don’t have to worry because the waiters are doing a great job, doing their best for you to have your drinks and food right in time. This is what I have always appreciated at this restaurant. And they will always ask you if everything is alright. You are told from the beginning how long it will take until your order is ready. From our experience, at this City Grill in Old Bucharest, not more than 20-30 minutes. If you are in a hurry, you can choose a Shepherd platter, which is polenta with Romanian cheese, fried egg and sour cream which is 16.5 RON, less than 4 Euros. Or, ask for fried pressed cheese with hand-cut chips which is 19.5 RON, or Romanian cheese platter, all kind of salads and so on. If you are not in a hurry, you can have a great lunch and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, or a traditional hard alcoholic drink like palinca. Then, try the soups.
!These prices were in force in 2019, but a few things have changed since then. Now, in the fall of 2022, due to the energy crisis, you might pay more for some of the dishes.

WHAT WE ATE AT CITY GRILL BUCHAREST OLD TOWN

As we were thirsty, we asked for a beer and a bottle of water for my wife which came almost instantly. A good local beer is 10 RON, that mean about 2 Euros and you can choose bottle or draft. As you can see in a picture above, we wanted to see how the traditional dishes are. So we ordered slow cooked chicken with garlic sauce and polenta and the traditional sarmalute, which means meat stuffed cabbage.  And I can assure you we made the right choice. For the chicken to be cooked right, it took about 25 minutes. Meanwhile I had one more beer.

The meat stuffed cabbage leaf was 29 RON, which is about 7 Euros and the chicken was 28.5 RON. Since the chicken was huge enough for my wife not to be able to finish it, I gave her a hand. It was slow cooked and a great experience. Together with the garlic sauce, it reminded me that this is not quite urban kitchen. You can find such a dish at the country, where people still get their food from their own households. We found something similar to this City Grill offer in the Old Bucharest Town at a small restaurant, called At the border in the Village Museum. But, we’ll talk about it later.

If you love wine, here are some ideas. You can have a glass of wine or a bottle…or how many you want. And there are also the desserts I haven’t tried this time but since the last experience at this City Grill in OLD TOWN BUCHAREST, it is worth trying the homemade ice-cream. But, don’t hesitate to order something else too.

The bill which also had included 3 bottles of beer for I was thirsty as I had already told you from the beginning, was about 94 RON. If you had a good experience, the tip is 15 percent from the bill. As I said during winter you can’t eat outside for it is too cold and inside you are not allowed to smoke, but this is everywhere in Romania. Hope this review is helpful and enjoy your staying in Bucharest! Btw, we’ve just read a fine story from our friend from Norway, Ms. Leitner on her travel blog – we invite you to enjoy her journey in Bucharest HERE
