HISTORY OF VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST

We learned that Victoria Avenue in Bucharest had been called in the beginning of this modern city, the Great Street. It was in 1692 and it will soon became known as the Bridge or Mogosoaia Avenue. This street connected the Old Court, during Constantin Brancoveanu reign, on Dambovita River, with the ruler’s castle in Mogosoaia.

CROSSING THE CITY, THIS IS VICTORIA AVENUE IN BUCHAREST

So, almost all buildings on Victoria Avenue at that time housed a shop. Just like now. This street was the very center of Bucharest and the authorities gave it the name Victoria Avenue after The War for Independence, in 1878, to remain in history as the symbol for the moment when Romania became an independent state. LANDMARKS AROUND VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST

In the early times of Bucharest, this street connected Dambovita river with an old monastery, Sarindar. It was demolished and the Military Circle took its place in the beginning of the 20th century.

But before that, Victoria Avenue was already the connection between Dambovita and Victoria Square. You can walk or use a bike on Victoria Avenue and all you need to do is follow a map in order not to miss interesting highlights.

BUCHAREST VICTORIA AVENUE AND TOURISTS

For example, if you walk from Dambovita River, the first thing you will see on your left is the CEC PALACE, Zlatari church on your right and just nearby this church, the Old Post Palace, housing today the ROMANIAN NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM. This is also one of the main entrances in the OLD CITY OF BUCHAREST.

HISTORICAL PLACES ON VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST

Not far from the Romanian National History Museum will see one of the oldest churches in Bucharest, Stavropoleos Church. Before you cross Queen Elisabeth Boulevard, you will see, on your left side, the Victory Shop Center, which was called in the beginning, Socec-Lafayette Galleries.

VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST FOR PEDESTRIANS

Now, you are on Victory Avenue crossint Queen Elisabeth Boulevard and on your left you will see The National Military Circle, where you can have lunch. On your right it is also Capsa House, one of the oldest meeting points for the Romanian elite in Bucharest. Nowadays, it is a meeting point for ordinary people sharing time with their friends.

REVOLUTION SQUARE ON VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST

There are also hotels in the area and, of course the University of Bucharest in University Square. Victoria Avenue also crosses The Palace Square, the place wherefrom Nicolae Ceausescu had to take a helicopter and fly in 1989, trying to escape to people’s fury, during the revolution against the communist party, which has changed forever the history of the country.

VICTORIA AVENUE AND COMMUNISM IN BUCHAREST

There is also a monument dedicated to the dead in the Romanian Revolution which ended 50 years of communism. Kretzulescu Church can also be visited in the newly called Revolution Square, not to mention the Royal Palace, near the old headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. Of course, when you walk or drive on Victoria Avenue, you will see on your right Victoria Palace….

BUILDINGS ON VICTORIA AVENUE BUCHAREST

After this highlight, on Victoria Avenue in Bucharest you will see old houses, many of them being built in the 19th century, like Gradisteanu House, Tomescu House, Manu House, all of them historical monuments but also George Enescu National Museum, where you can learn about the life of the great composer. Bucharest is trying to be friendly with bikers.

Also, there is something not to miss when walking on Victoria Avenue in Bucharest. The Romanian Athenaeum is on the right side of the boulevard as you come from Military Circle to Victoria Palace, just near The Royal Palace.
