The Government House or Building is the key to power for every political party. This is for when winning the elections for a majority in Parliament, according to Constitution, you have the right to ask the President for a nominee for the Prime Minister which is the head of the Government. And the Government is housed by the Victoria Palace.

HISTORY OF VICTORIA PALACE ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT BUILDING

Victoria Palace in Bucharest is the headquarters of the Romanian Government and has entered since 2004 on the list of historical monuments. It was built in the 30s modern architectural style by Duiliu Marcu, the architect that built The School of War too. Works at Victoria Palace started in 1937 and finished in 1944 when German bombs almost destroyed it. It was rebuilt in 1952.

ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT HOUSE  IN THE PAST

Until 1945 in front of the building there was one of the strangest palaces in Bucharest. Sturdza Palace, owned by Prince Grigore M. Sturdza was a huge building made of every possible materials, in every possible colours and in all possible styles. It housed The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, moved, after 1944, in Victoria Palace. Sturdza Palace was demolished in 1945 after a great, harmfull fire.

WHEN THE GOVERNMENT BUILDING IN BUCHAREST HOUSED THE ROMANIAN GOVERNMENT 

Victoria Palace has been the headquarters of Council of Ministers during the communist period and, in 1990, became the headquarters of the Romanian Government. The building was made following a symmetrical plan and has a 100 meters frontage in Victoria Square. At the entrance there are a hall of honor and monumental stairs. Sliding doors on each part of the hall transform it together with two interior gardens into a large place for open air receptions. On the 1st floor there is the main saloon, 10 m / 70 m but also a reception hall, council halls, a ballroom and a gallery of honor with great mirrors and columns. Ministers’ offices are at he next floor, just like other offices for the Government employees.

Victoria Palace is also the headquarters of Government apparatus like chancellery of the Prime Minister, General Secretariat of the Government, Department for the liaison with the Parliament or Control Body of the Prime Minister. Before get to Victoria Palace, you can see the area, like AVIATORS STATUE, Romana Square and the ANGLICAN CHURCH near it. In Victory Square there is also the THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM and the PEASANT MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST. Don’t miss a great walk on VICTORIA AVENUE to the center of Bucharest.
