OLD COURT CHURCH

BUCHAREST OLD COURT CHURCH

This is one of the oldest churches in Bucharest. Yet, some say it might be the oldest one. Lord Vladislav the 1st Vlaicu built it in 1350. He ruled the Romanian county until his death in 1377. What we know for sure is that he is the first ruler who issued a coin in this area in the Middle Ages. Inhabitants call the church he built, Saint Anton Church. According to other sources, it was Mircea the Elder who built Bucharest Old Court Church. That was in the beginning of the 15th century. It was the most important worship place in Bucharest for centuries. In 1715, other lord, Stefan Cantacuzino signed a paper the burial of Mircea the Elder right here. Yet, his grave, unique in Romania, is at Cozia Monastery.

OLD COURT CHURCH IN BUCHAREST HISTORY

The original church had a great tower. But a lightning struck it in 1691. Like the OLD COURT nearby, great fires destroyed the church many times. Many other worship places had to face hard times in the period, like the ARMENIAN CHURCH too. At the end of the 18th century, a lord called Constantin Hagerli sold the land on which the church was. Thus, all around the church merchants built shops. Again, in 1847 a great fire destroyed part of the worship place and all the buildings nearby. Nothing remained after that. Only a small monument to remember that there was something here. Nowadays, near the new church there are pubs and a shop with religious objects. There is also a  City Grill Restaurant nearby and a small park.
