BUCHAREST HERASTRAU OR KING MICHAEL PARK

Herastrau Park Bucharest is the largest in the Romanian capital. It is near highlights like Arch of Triumph and Village Museum. We can get here by bus, lines 335. But we strongly advise you to use metro if you come from University Square. Make sure you get to Aviator subway station and then walk a little. In recent years, one of the greatest attractions of Herastrau Park Bucharest is the Japanese Garden. Since we live here, we come and see it every late April.

ARCH OF TRIUMPH ENTRANCE

Herastrau Park in Bucharest is the largest park to visit in Bucharest. Its name comes from an old machine designed to cut wood, powered by Colentina river waters. You can enter the park from the ARCH OF TRIUMPH.

HERASTRAU PARK HISTORY

The area where the park lies today was near a small lake. A landlord bought it at the end of the 17th century. He gave this land to Cotroceni Monastery.  Herastrau Park in Bucharest became a few years later the inhabitants’ favorite place for long walks and spare time. There are many trees and interesting flowers. Not to mention the Japanese Garden. You can see by far many other awesome plants at the BOTANICAL GARDEN IN BUCHAREST.
All you see today started from the will of another landlord, Alexandru Ipsilanti who built here a kind of small refugee for his wife in 1782.

During the 19th century Herastrau Park remained a simple place for the people to enjoy nature. It was in 1921 when the area became National Park Herastrau. Long after the oldest park in Bucharest which is CISMIGIU GARDENS.

WHAT TO SEE

From 1933 to 1939, authorities made a lot of works to change the park. So, the new modern Herastrau park got the name Carol II. The same artist who designed Cismigiu Garden built restaurants here. They also built roads and let boats carry passengers on the lake.

ROMANIAN ROYAL FAMILY AND HERASTRAU PARK

Near the park, in 1936, was built the VILLAGE MUSEUM and also Queen Elisabeta’s palace. This is an unique building in Eastern Europe, kind of Moorish style of Malaga castle. Learn more about this building HERE.

DURING THE COMMUNIST PERIOD

Of course, during the communist leadership, the park was called I.V. Stalin. After 1990 its name was again Herastrau Park Bucharest. If you are in the area, you might want to try some traditional Romanian food. You can find it in the Village Museum Bucharest restaurant, just near Herastrau Park.
