WHO WAS VASILE URSEANU?

The Astronomical Observatory in Bucharest is officially known as Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory. It took his founder’s name. Vasile Urseanu was born in 1848. He dedicated his life to more hobbies but two of them will make history: the navy and the astronomy. He studied at the School of War in Bucharest, then learned more in Paris. In 1874 he returned to Romania and became the commander of the navy called Romania. During the Independence War, the future founder of the Astronomical Observatory in Bucharest, commanded an artillery battery and, in 1878, became the chief of all navy artillery.

WHY THE OBSERVATORY IN BUCHAREST TOOK VASILE URSEANU NAME?

Mircea cel Batran was the first Romanian school-navy ever built. Vasile Urseanu commanded this ship. The first complete Romanian fleet came into being in 1890, also under Urseanu’s command. He was the captain of the fleet pearl, the cruiser ,,Elisabeth’’ which had missions in the Mediterranean Sea. The Atlantic Ocean, The Northern Sea and also in the Baltic Sea met this cruiser. It was the longest mission a Romanian battleship had ever accomplished. During this mission, commander Vasile Urseanu had the time to watch the sky and see the stars movement. He had this passion since early childhood. So, he built a boat-style house in Bucharest. If you are interested in technology, don’t miss the Technic Museum in Bucharest.

BUCHAREST ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY BUILDING HISTORY

In the top of the building, he also arranged an astronomical observatory in 1910. The observatory had the third most powerful telescope in the country, a Zeiss. The admiral died in 1926. His widow donated the house to the Town Hall in 1933. She asked the authorities, following Vasile Urseanu’s will, the observatory to function inside, in his memory. The telescope was functional again on the dome of the house in 1950. Communist authorities opened the observatory again for public in the same year. In the 60s the building housed The Experimental Sciences Museum. The old telescope left place to a more advanced one, the most powerful in the country.

Due to a private donation, the Observatory had a new telescope in 2008. It is a 30 cm in diameter MEADE LX200R. It is able to highly record solar flares and many other things in the universe. Thus, in 2009, thousands of people could attend a virtual exhibition entitled A journey through the Universe. The Astronomical Observatory Bucharest can be a part of your trip around Roman Square.
