ANTIM MONASTERY IN BUCHAREST SHORT HISTORY

This monastery was built between 1713 and 1715 by the high priest Antim Ivireanu, arrived from Georgia. He paid for the works and he also left all his wealth and goods to this worship place when he died in 1716 in Bucharest. By the way, all the artists are buried at BELLU CEMETERY!

The high priest Antim, founder of Antim Monastery in Bucharest you can visit nowadays also recommended that his wealth to be used for helping all youth who wanted to study and become scholars, all poor men in need and all young women who had not enough money to get married following tradition. The Greek monks will manage the monastery and will lead it to financial collapse soon after its founder’s death.

ANTIM MONASTERY IN BUCHAREST IN RUIN

Yet, in the beginning of the 19th century, Antim Monastery in Bucharest becomes a School for priests. It almost fell in ruin after an earthquake in 1836 but it is restored and in 1854 is safe enough to house the Archives of the State. The door and the windows were made by Antim Ivireanu himself.

VISIT THE MONASTERY AND UNIFICATION SQUARE

The entrance portal has also an archway, settled on two stone columns. When the works for the House of People and for the entire Unification Square started in 1984, the whole monastery complex was moved by translation. Many other worship places were simply demolished by the communist leaders. Another church also moved is MIHAI VODA MONASTERY.
