Kiseleff Park in Bucharest has one of the strangest and also funniest stories in the Romanian capital.

KISELEFF PARK AND THE HISTORY OF BUCHAREST

After 1821, the Russian general Pavel Kiseleff was sent to Romania to rule the country. This happened from 1829 to 1834 and the Romanians had a kind of Constitution for the first time. It was order in the country and the Lord Gheorghe Bibescu decided to thank the Russian general and build him a statue. Kiseleff said no and suggested the Romanian authorities to use the money for public utilities, such as streets or gardens.

AROUND KISELEFF PARK IN BUCHAREST

So, Kiseleff Avenue became a new avenue with trees on each side and a garden which was to be called Kiseleff Park in Bucharest in 1844, on June 29. Fountains were also built inside the garden and a lake, with great stones as in the wilderness. Later this lake disappeared but the stones are still in the park to remember its beginning. Three areas are the most interesting. The first one is behind Mavrogheni Church, the second is near The Arch of Triumph and the third is in front of the House of Free Press.
