Description: George Enescu said about his childhood that it had been like a prison for his parents had taken so much care about him that he had never felt the freedom of a usual child
Enescu’s parents had 4 born dead children and other 7 children who died soon after their birth and his mother was terrified with the idea that George might have the same faith. “They were taking care of me in a way that was almost suffocating. Trembling for every little happening that could hurt me. That made me a grown-up to soon.”, Enescu would confess later to a friend. He could sing a bird song for example with his violin immediately after he had heard it. He also knew the musical notes when he was 5 years old. And at 9, he would also speak English, French and German. He used to play with his first violin all the sounds he had heard in nature.

Who helped George Enescu become the Romanian greatest composer? Well, it was his father, as we learned visiting the museum, but there was also another person who took care of the boy. Her name was Lydie Cedre, a French woman who taught George all about music, culture and who also took care of him after the whole family had moved to Vienna. When George Enescu was 5 years old, his father bought a piano and his son began to learn at home everything about the music. Later, at Vienna, he attended concerts with Lydie and learned more and more.

The great Romanian artist Corneliu Baba met George Enescu and he also painted a portrait of the composer. Later after their meeting he would note in a journal: “After the concert where he performed Handel, I needed to walk alone on the streets until late in the night. I had cried at the performance and I swore to play the violin some day. His presence followed me for all my life and it was the basis of the portrait I created for me and for him.”
