KING MICHAEL OF ROMANIA AND BUCHAREST

Michael I of Romania became king of the country at the age of 5 and he was the only king to rule 90 years after being crowned. Yet, in September 6, 1940 he was crowned as the real king of Romania and it was the only moment when His Majesty wore the steel crown and not swearing faith to the Parliament in Bucharest, which was suspended two years before by King Carol II, who came to throne after King Ferdinand and Carol the 1st, the first monarch of Romania and the one who built the first railway network in the country, as you can see at the RAILWAYS MUSEUM BUCHAREST. In 1940, King Michael I would let all the powers of the state to Marshall Ion Antonescu, who will be sent to prison and executed as a war criminal a few years later. The General Antonescu will sign an alliance with the Nazi Germany and invade Russia in 1941. It was a hard moment for everyone, especially for the Jewish community whose Choral Temple in Bucharest had been devastated by the extreme right party, the Iron Guard the same year. Many Romanian soldiers died at Stalingrad battle and not only. It is the same King Michael I of Romania who decided to arrest General Antonescu in 1944, stop the war against Russia and the Allies and send army against Hitler. That partially saved Romania from destruction.

The Red Army had no mercy anyway. Here is where many of these historical facts happened, at the Royal Palace in Bucharest where the King Michael I of Romania will be brought for the last time this December.
