Theodor Aman Museum in Bucharest is one of the oldest memorial museums in the Romanian capital. It was the artist’s dream his home to become a museum, although he couldn’t arrange that during his life. The building was architect Franz Scheller’s masterpiece, of course, following the plan made by Aman himself in 1869. It is a severe, yet sensitive building, mysterious but also hospitable. In 1850, Theodor Aman went to Paris to learn painting and it is the moment when he will be in love with history. Mihai Viteazu final night was painted in 1852 and the Battle of Alma in 1855. He will come back to Bucharest in 1863 and founded the first belle-arte school. All important people of the Romanian capital came to his home,


the nowadays Theodor Aman Museum, and got involved in the beginning of the cultural life in Bucharest. In 1883 things had changed. Theodor Aman had to pawn his house but will never be able to buy it back. Aman’s will clearly mentioned that the house, in the center of Bucharest, near the Art Collection Museum and the Romanian Athenaeum, should become Theodor Aman Museum. And it happened.
