Village Museum in Bucharest is an open-air exhibit for tourists who want to learn more about the rural life in Romania. It is so fine that you might want to move into it. That was a joke. You wouldn’t want to leave in underground houses or in the same house with your parents, like people in Romania used to do and still do, do you? 🙂 The Village Museum in Bucharest is a great history lesson for all the people all around the world about the life in the South-Eastern Europe, under the Russian influence, Turkish influence and also, ancient and medieval influences.

OPEN-AIR MUSEUMS AROUND THE WORLD AND VILLAGE MUSEUM IN BUHCAREST

The Village Museum in Bucharest, near HERASTRAU PARK is one of the first open-air ethnographic museums in the world. In 1936, when it was opened for the public, there were only three such museums, Skansen Museum in Stockholm, Bigdo Museum in Lellehamer, Norway and Transilvanian Ethnographic Museum in Cluj, Romania.

VISIT HOUSES FROM ALL ROMANIAN PROVINCES IN VILLAGE MUSEUM BUCHAREST

The first try to create a museum dedicated to the country life in Romania was attempted in 1867 at Paris Universal Exhibition. Romanian rural constructions were exhibited there. Then, a sociologist, Dimitrie Gusti sent students and volunteers to target and rebuild old houses from all Romanian provinces and villages. Also traditional Romanian food is to be found in the restaurant inside the museum. Learn more about it here.

WANT TO SEE 200 OLD HOUSES IN BUCHAREST VILLAGE MUSEUM?

In 1936, King Carol II opened the new museum which housed 33 authentic houses from Maramures, Moldavia, Transylvania and Muntenia and also churches. The Village Museum became in 1940, after Bucovina was taken by the Soviet Union, house for refugees and many of the buildings were damaged. In 1948, the Museum opened its gates again. 233 constructions could be visited.

A VILLAGE MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST ALMOST DESTROYED BY COMMUNISTS

In 1978 it will become the Museum of popular art of the Socialist Republic of Romania and was close to be moved or simply, demolished by the communist authorities. In 1990, it finally becomes the Village Museum of Bucharest, a small map of Romania villages and of traditions all around the country. Its headquarters was near HOUSE OF FREE PRESS.

VILLAGE MUSEUM BUCHAREST NOWADAYS

Nowadays in Village Museum Bucharest, the tourists can visit 338 monuments brought from Transylvania, Banat, Muntenia, Oltenia, Dobrogea and Moldavia and also popular art artifacts. Many others popular artifacts can be seen at the PEASANT MUSEUM in Victory Square where there is the NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, too. A great fire destroyed part of the complex in 2002 but everything was rebuilt and nowadays the most representative museum for Romania is open again and can be visited.
