HISTORY OF RAILWAYS MUSEUM BUCHAREST

This museum was opened in 1939 but it was almost destroyed in the World War Two together with the NORTH RAILWAY STATION BUCHAREST.  The station was one of the main targets in the Romanian capital for the allies planes. It was before Romania got out of the war and started fighting against the Nazis in 1944. The museum opened again in 1953 in the new location. The Railways Museum in Bucharest closed again in 1968. Authorities opened it one year later when Romania celebrated 100 years from the opening of its first railway Bucharest – Giurgiu.

FUNNY STORY ABOUT THE ROMANIAN RAILWAYS

In 1876 King Carol the 1st, the first monarch of modern Romania noted that it took about an hour to get from the capital to Giurgiu by train, on the new open route. There is an irony here from the historical point of view. Because, nowadays it takes an hour to get from Bucharest to Giurgiu, too, so the infrastructure looks almost the same in 2018 as in 1876.

Description: This is the first diesel engine built in Romania at Malaxa Factory in 1936

The engine you see above was a Malaxa Ganz engine with 6 cylinders and 55 km per hour speed. The Railways Museum Bucharest has only 3 rooms where you can also see locomotives from different times of the Romanian history. There are ticket collectors’ uniforms. You can see also the rebuilt engine that made the first trip from Bucharest to Giurgiu in 1869. And a layout of the Saligny bridge.

SALIGNY AND KING CAROL THE FIRST

Why it is important? It was in 1895, when the nowadays bridge at Cernavoda over the Danube was built. The constructor, Anghel Saligny invited the king and the government to officially open the bridge. They called it King Carol the 1st bridge. To prove the good work Saligny stood with his team under the bridge in a boat when the first two trains crossed the Danube on the bridge. If it fell, they were dead. His portrait and layout of that bridge are at Railways Museum Bucharest.

OLD LOCOMOTIVE

One of the most interesting things I’ve seen here is an old locomotive. This engine, you will see below, is a Pacific engine. You will see it inside the museum and outside, when you will find yourself right in the North Railway Station. These locomotive were built, for the first time, in 1902 in the United States. They first arrived in Romania between 1914 and 1916 through a German company, Maffei. After the war, in 1953, the Romanian authorities would ask for help from the same company to buy another 50 such engines.

AN INTERESTING STORY

The Pacific locomotives have a great story in Romania. For instance, the last one, the 2213 one, last served the Romanian Railways Company in 1975. This type of engines had been used in Romania for 60 years. Each one, developing a 123 km per hour speed, covered from 7 to 10 millions kilometers, which is about 200 times going around Planet Earth. It can be seen at the Railways Museum Bucharest.
