It is quite a large park, but not as large as Carol Park or King Michael the 1st, or Herastrau. In the middle of Cismigiu Park it is a lake, maybe the oldest man made lake in Bucharest. There are also the ruins of an old monastery, At the citadel. Actually, they are the ruins of a monastery built in 1756 by a local ruler, called Vacarescu. From that citadel there was a hidden tunnel that could help the local boyars escape to Dambovita river in dangerous times.

CISMIGIU PARK HISTORY
HOW A MUDDY LAKE BECAME AN AWESOME GARDEN
Cismigiu Park in Bucharest was a dirty and muddy place, with underground water sources in the mid 17th century. A will was built here in 1779. Here also lived the great ministry of waters at that time, Dumitru Suiulgi-basa. Inhabitants called him the great Cismigiu. The word came from the Turkish Cesme, which ment the waters and wills owner. The area has been a danger for the public health until 1830. That was because the floods provoked by the River Dambovita and the like itself.
One of the youngest, let’s say, parks in Bucharest is the CIRCUS PARK, where you can see rare trees, flowers and the famous turtles in the lake in the area.

A GREAT PARK IN BUCHAREST CENTER
In 1830, the general Pavel Kiseleff, the Russian governor of the two Romanian provinces demanded a public garden to replace the old lake in Bucharest at Cismigiu. In 1848 the lake and the land were bought by the authorities who also asked Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, a landscape painter from Wien to come and build a garden. Meyer decided to plant 30.000 trees in the new park, built flower carpets and footpaths and in 1852, when he died, a small wall was also built to surround the garden. All the works ended in 1854 and the official inauguration took place on 22 March 1860.
It was Cismigiu Park or Cismigiu Garden as it is usually known…
