GET TO BUCHAREST DELTA
Bucharest Natural Delta is in district 4 of the Romanian capital, between Vacaresti Avenue, Oltenitei Street and Dambovita. See the map at the end of the post. Actually, the river Dambovita is one of the reasons the great project about this area didn’t work. It was the communist period and the regime thought it was a good idea to built an huge defense system against floods for Bucharest. And Vacaresti area, or Bucharest Delta as it is known now, was part of the plan. It wouldn’t work.

A BUCHAREST AROUND NATURE
Bucharest is actually around this protected natural area called Bucharest Delta. It’s a whole natural area inside the biggest city of Romania and an alley to guide through this beautiful jungle. The parks of Bucharest are quite interesting, but this wild area right in the middle of the town is spectacular and you shouldn’t miss. There are also points where you can read and learn more about the place: 7 panels were installed by the Association of the Natural Park Vacaresti. It’s about 7 areas of interest, like birds, natural lakes, reptiles, otter homes. The access is free and you can, also, ask for a tour with the Association.

NATURE WON IN BUCHAREST DELTA
There has been 20 years while the entire area was abandoned. The authorities didn’t know that underground, springs were just about to come out. Thus, soon, new trees appeared, new flowers, new lakes and an entire fauna replaced the deserted area, which nobody wanted. The problem was it was inside the city. Why none could build something there? Because, on this Bucharest Delta it is all about the underground water sources. Another example of underground water coming up to the ground is the YOUTH LAKE IN BUCHAREST, it is in the middle of the Youth Park where there was a swamp similar to the Vacaresti Natural Delta and where the authorities in the 70s managed to create the largest park in Bucharest. Then a rare kind of otter was found in the area, which meant the environment was safe and clean, and the whole project of this protected area started.

HOW THE NATURAL DELTA BUCHAREST APPEARED
It was in 2011, when a visit of the Romanian ministry of Environment with the ministry of Environment of Argentina, Claudio Paladino and other members or the United Nations took place at Vacaresti Bucharest Delta. A similar project had been developed in Argentina and that was a great example for the Romanian authorities. It took 5 years for the area to be declared protected, despite the real estate interests. It happened just like in the situation of the PEOPLE SALVATION CATHEDRAL which ought to have been built in CAROL PARK. Now, it is near the ROMANIAN PARLIAMENT and should soon be finished.

THE PROJECT OF BUCHAREST NATURAL DELTA
Hundreds of families were moved and their homes were destroyed after a law signed by the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1988 in Bucharest Vacaresti area. He decided to start the works for a great hydrological complex for the rivers nearby to protect the capital against flooding. This part of Bucharest, yet, remained a no-men’s-land after the revolution in 1989( see the house and private life of Ceausescu HERE). In 2000, an Australian citizen talked to the Romanian Government and won a bid for a project to civilize the area. He wanted to build casinos, a hippodrome, a hotel, a conference hall and blocks of flats. The project failed too, and the old communist project would soon be conquered by nature.
