WHERE IS YOUTH PARK IN BUCHAREST?

Youth Park in Bucharest is in district number 4, close to Unirii Square, the center of the city and also close to three subway stations: Youth Subway Station, Revolution Heroes Station and Constantin Brancoveanu Station. It was built for the south part of the city population, where there were no places to relax in the early communist period. Initially, it was called Bucur-Park from the name of the Romanian capital founder, the shepherd Bucur, as you can read in our article dedicated to the HISTORY OF BUCHAREST. It was the architect and designer Velentin Donose who built the place with the help of the so-called volunteers, young men brought to work as a patriotic act of building the socialism, as it was the rule in those years. The work for the Youth Park started in 1965 and ended in 1974.

You are not allowed to swim in the lake, though, when we went to spend some time there, in June 2018, we have seen many people who jumped in the water for quick refreshing. A piece of advice: don’t try that. Anyway, the best time to get into the Youth Park Bucharest is summer, for you can enjoy the fresh air, the coolness of the trees and of the lake and also a cold beer on the grass. There are small shops in the area, make sure you buy everything you need before entering the park. During the winter, there are places where you can ski in Youth Park Bucharest.

Called Cocioc Park in the 60s, the area was an abandoned place actually where the thieves came to hide and where also lived homeless people. They were hunted by the police and could hide only on one of the three islands in the middle of the lake and in the swamp. It was here also where all the children in the south of Bucharest came to swim in the summer days. According to statistics, at least two drew here every month until the Youth Park was built and access restricted.

STORY OF YOUTH PARK BUCHAREST

Before the Youth Park came into being in 1974, in the area there was a swamp, periodically flooded by Dambovita river. It is the river that cross Bucharest. After World War I and World War 2, people use to throw there the trash and the swamp became, soon, a cesspool where poor people came to look for different things they could use or sell. The Romanian authorities had a plan in 1935 to change the place into a park, but as the great war was close, the plan was put off. The name of the area was The Valley of Sorrow because of the poor people living there and also because the road to the old cemetery which will become soon the famous BELLU CEMETERY BUCHAREST, passed nearby. A funny moment was in 1933, when during the winter, as everything was under the snow, the authorities encouraged people to come and ski. Winter sports are also allowed nowadays in the park.

STRANGE LEGENDS IN YOUTH PARK BUCHAREST

In ancient times, probably before the city became the capital of the Romanian county, it is said that there was a small village with a small church in the place where you can walk now in Youth Park Bucharest. Suddenly, everything sank and went down on the bottom of a lake which appeared from nowhere. The cross on the roof of the church could still be seen in 1953, but this is not an official information. There are also legends about the tunnels under the lake built by Dracula the Impaler while he ruled the country. One of them might have an entrance at the Crematory which can be seen in the Park. It could have been used to escape from the OLD COURT OF BUCHAREST. Other sources say that these tunnels were used by the boyars who had properties in the area in the 18th century to escape when the country was at war. The existence of these tunnels was never confirmed by the Romanian authorities.

TO DO IN YOUTH PARK BUCHAREST

Immediately after the Youth Park Bucharest was open to public, in 1974, the Government decided to build there a Montagne-Russe, a Baby-cart track, a summer cinema and a theater, a funicular and a small park for children with electronic games. They would come into being many years later and nowadays there is indeed a panoramic spinning wheel and a city for children. This part of the park is so noisy that we could not stand for long and we ran back to the lake.
