PEASANT MUSEUM IN BUCHAREST HISTORY
The idea of such an institution to house original Romanian peasants’ tools and traditional art items belonged to Lord Alexandru Ioan Cuza at about 1860. He ordered an exhibition to take place in one the oldest market places of the city, Obor. The peasants exhibited flowers, farming tools, popular art items and even animals. The nowadays headquarters of the Peasant Museum in Bucharest, which is near Antipa Museum, The Geology Museum and also opposite to the Government headquarters, was built between 1912 and 1941.
Some collections had already been gathered and exhibited since the opening of the new museum in other institutions like The National Museum of Antiquities.
The first manager of the Peasant Museum was Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcas, forced by the communists to resign in 1948. The building became the headquarters of Lenin-Stalin Museum and of The History of the Communist Party Museum.
